IMPRESSIVE TURNOUT IN DC FOR PROTEST

The picture in the blog entry above was cropped; the actual picture from the traffic cam at 14th and E shows shows Pennsylvania Ave all the way to the Capitol dome. The crowd appears to extend the entire distance in the shot that Michelle Malkin has on her blog.

100K is probably a generous estimate for that picture. It's taken from 14th and E Street, probably on top of the Willard hotel. From there it is almost exactly 6000 feet to the capitol building, which you can see at the top left; you're looking along Pennsylvania Ave. The street there is about 120 feet wide. A moving crowd has at least 6 sq. ft. per person when it's very, very tightly packed; 10-15 sq. ft would be more normal.

(Putting those figures in perspective, if you're in a crowd with one person every six square feet, it's 22 inches from the tip of your nose to the back of the head of the person in front of you, and 29 inches from your nose to those of the people to your right and left. That's very tight. For 10 sq. ft, it's 31 and 38 inches.)

So if we do the math, that crowd is between 72,000 and 120,000 people. For it to be a million people, there'd have to be one person every eight inches in both directions.

My figures are very generous; the crowd you can see is probably less than 50,000.
